Review: the debut album that sounds like a city at 4am

Quiet synths, field recordings and a voice that barely rises above a whisper. It is the best debut of the year.

Cityscapes during nighttime

The album was recorded mostly between midnight and dawn.

You can hear the city on this record: a night bus braking, rain on a window, a conversation in another language drifting up from the street.

Around these sounds, the artist builds songs so restrained they feel like secrets.

Small sounds, big feeling

Most tracks are under three minutes. None has a traditional chorus. It should not work. It does, because every sound is chosen with care.

An album for headphones, long walks and the hour when nobody is awake to text you.

Verdict: four stars. Best heard late.
